A 17 August 2019 is a 74th Indonesia’s independence day. After my husband attended a ceremony in his office, we went to kediri to attend wedding celebration of his classmate. We spent about 3,5 hours from Surabaya to Kediri by car through new highway. He just drove with speed 80 km per hour, when the other drivers drove over 80 km per hours (overspeed). Yeah. You will be surprise if seeing indonesian drivers is driving overspeed. And usually they are too proud of their time taking from A to B just x hours faster than before (when the highway had not been developed yet).
Don’t ask me whether the police will stop them about their overspeed or not. You will find them NOT. The police just still sits down and works what they have to do in their officw. That is most of the highway in Indonesia. There are still some of highway that are installed CCTV in some spots. If there is an overspeed car or truck or bus, so the police will stop them in another spot after watching them in CCTV.
Usually, if the drivers don’t want to confront with the justice, they should pay a penalty in the place they are interdicted. After that, maybe the driver never do it again or maybe they still do that. We don’t know.
Yes, in recent years, President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, developed Trans-Jawa, highways from east to west in Java Island and Trans-Sumatra, highways from north to south of Sumatra Island. It needs funds from Realized State Budget.
Even the toll entrance price is expensive enough but the people still choose highway to save their time when travelling. Service provider of E-money starts developing their business because of the policy. All vehicle entering the tool must pay by using e-toll.
Sadly, trees in the forests had to be cut down to provide land for highways. Some rest areas in new highway still don’t have shady trees. It’s so hot and almost blazing. Maybe you have to bring so many mineral water so as not to be dehydrated.
In other impact, people no longer passed regional road (non-toll road) or maybe just a little driver. Many shops, stores, restaurants, street foods, started losing their costumers. Just a few people shopping in their business. Maybe the next years they will decide to close their business if there will be no a sufficient profit.
Even tough, Indonesia’s transportation system is better than before. There are positif and negative impacts of the highway development.
